Abstract

A literature review examined methodological problems which have arisen in epidemiological studies of the role of alcohol in traffic collisions. The methodological problems resulted in varying estimates of collision relative risk as a function of blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Based on the literature review, an improved epidemiological study of crash risk was performed in Long Beach, California and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The study arrived at considerably higher estimates of the relationship between BAC and collision crash risk than in prior studies.(A)
