Abstract

The ICADTS Working Group on Prescribing and Dispensing Guidelines for Medicinal Drugs Affecting Driving Performance has recently proposed some guidelines and recommendations. Categorization of medicinal drugs according to their impairment properties is one of the ways of improving prescription and dispensation of medicinal drugs for the driver. Recently some countries have introduced categorization system or labelling for the medicinal drugs that affect driving performance. Three-tier categorization for medicinal drugs and driving is possible, and most of the information recorded in the different countries is similar. As indicated in the ICADTS Working Group on Prescribing and Dispensing Guidelines for Medicinal Drugs Affecting Driving Performance recommendations, "there is a need for a international centre for maintaining a three-tier categorization system for drugs based on consensus among experts in the field of drugs and driving". Whether or not this Working Group can start and assume its function is discussed. (Abstract only)
