Abstract

The present paper reports on data collected in an assessment and referral program of DWIs in Phoenix, Arizona, who were screened as problem drinkers. Subjects were 281 clients screened as 'high risk' problem drinkers over a five-month period. Information collected consisted both of prior police records, and a test battery. An interview was also conducted. Ninety percent of the subjects were male; 85% were between 20 and 49 years of age; 60% were White-Anglo Saxon; the majority were married; 73% were employed full-time, with the majority engaged in blue collar work. Approximately 80% of the clients scored above the cut-off point for problem drinkers. Admitted adverse affects from drinking realized high percentages in the areas of health, blackouts, shakes in the morning, family relationships, work and friendships. The problem drinking characteristics reported refer to presently experienced problems. The high risk group of DWI individuals are appropriate for rehabilitation for problem drinkers. (MW)
