Abstract

In 1977 the number of blood samples for alcohol determination in Denmark reached 23000. In order to be able to manage this task in future it was necessary to automate the analytic procedure. The automation was commenced in 1977 and was fully developed in 1979. The system consists of automated diluters, Perkin-Elmer F 42 head-space gas chromatographs, which are coupled on-line to a Hewlett Packard computer with a disc-based operative system. A large number of programs ensure that the data, which are transferred to the computer continuously during the analysis are treated correctly. These application programs may be divided into the following groups: measuring, collection of data, data processing, man-computer communication. The application programs are developed by Messrs Kemp & Lauritzen, Copenhagen, in cooperation with the institute. In the system each individual sample is analyzed twice. When the second analysis has been made on a series of 30 samples, the computer prints out the results of the analysis and controls them statistically, and if the results can be approved the ready analytical reports are printed out to the police. A description of the system in more detail and the experience gained with the system will be presented. (TRRL)
