Abstract

This Russian study considers the effects of atenolol and ramipril in vehicle drivers suffering mild or moderate arterial hypertension. The efficacy of the treatment was assessed by haemodynamic indices, and its safety was determined by registration of side-effects and the impact of the drugs on visual reactions. The data showed that long-term taking of ramipril decreased drivers' visual reactions, but atenolol did not. Drivers also reported more side-effects, including drowsiness, with ramipril. Ramipril is effective in decreasing blood pressure but as it tends to endanger safe driving performance, its use in hypertensioned drivers is not advisable.
