Abstract

This article summarises the work that is currently ongoing in the EEC with regard to road vehicle legislation, with special reference to truck weights and dimensions and the mitigation of their effects upon pavement damage. Brief details of the staffing levels of the Directorate General for Transport (DG VII) are also provided. The scope of the Directive on Weights and Dimensions of Heavy Goods Vehicles (85/3), and its amendment (Directive 86/360) are summarised. The substance of the proposed Directive which defines the parameter of the equivalence to air suspension for the drive axle, and stipulates that the axle be equipped with twin as opposed to wide (super single) tyres is also provided.
