Abstract

This article describes a model which can calculate the load imposed upon a lorries drive subsystem due to pavement unevenness. In this model both the circular shape of the wheel, and the way this shape alters as it passes over road bumps can be accurately represented. The forces of gravity on each individual part of the model can also be taken into account. The model presented in this paper is applied to a four wheel drive vehicle model with 14 degrees of freedom. The wheel has three degrees of freedom. The unevenness of each road track can be either the same or different. The model can estimate the vehicles response when running over any shape of pavement unevenness. The following parameters can be varied: vehicle mass, stiffness and geometry; initial speed; and engaged gear box ratio. Worked examples are provided.
