Abstract

This paper examined padding concepts to improve the effectiveness of padding. The paper is only intended to be an evaluation of various concepts as countermeasures for chest and pelvic protection in side impacts. In addition, a concept for a hydraulic bubble pad is analyzed. Parametric analyses of various padding characteristics and their effects on thoracic and pelvic injury potential are included. Corroboration of the findings given in the paper is suggested through bench testing and vehicle testing of suitable bubble pad designs.
