Abstract

The results of a comprehensive crash-injury investigation currently underway in England are reported in this paper. The focus is on the remaining injury problems associated with restrained occupants. Because of legislation introduced in 1983, seat belt wearing rates are at 95% for front seat occupants. The fitment and wearing rate for rear seat occupants is low, but compulsory fitting of rear belts in new cars sold after April 1987 is expected to lead to corresponding reduction in rear seat occupant casualties.
