Abstract

This paper discusses some of the initial applications of research conducted under the FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION's (FHWA) "Truck- Pavement Interaction" High Priority National Program Area (HPNPA). These are limited to following work involving the FWHA Test Road Facility and the prototype dynamic truck actuation system called DYNTRAC: a) The load equivalency study; b) primary response analysis; and c) vehicle/pavement interaction. Brief details of the design, construction and instrumentation of the Test Road are provided, as are technical details of the controlled moving load vehicle tests that were conducted as part of the study, and the horizontal strain responses of the pavement. The laboratory experiments which are part of the vehicle pavement interaction studies were performed using the computer controlled hydraulic actuator system, DYNTRAC. A fully instrumented two truck axle was used as the primary test vehicle. The main independent variables were: tyre type (conventional radial, low profile radial, and wide based); tyre inflation pressure; type of truck and truck suspension; truck speed; and road roughness. Computer simulations were also used to study truck pavement interaction, and these too are discussed briefly.
