Abstract

A deformable featureless headform model was developed using LS-DYNA3D. The model used a visco-elastic material type based on data obtained from 2.68, 4.02, 5.36 and 6.71 m/s (6, 9, 12 and 15 mph) head drop tests. The model predictions were validated against results from various experiments, such as drop tests, sheet metal and/or foam tests and vehicle upper interior impact tests. Comparisons between predicted and experimental results showed excellent correlations for all the cases studied. In addition, headform impact responses subjected to different impact conditions using the deformable headform model and the rigid headform model at reduced velocities were also compared. The application of the deformable featureless headform model to afore-mentioned test conditions indicates that the model is reliable when it is used to predict the dynamic responses of the headform.
