Abstract

This paper describes a study which examined the human factors requirements for imaging systems that provide controllers of land vehicles with a view of the driving environment in situations where direct view is impossible. Potential applications include autonomous or remotely piloted vehicles. The experiments involved an instrumented car that was driven on a closed road circuit, with the outside view being provided by a video camera mounted on the car's roof. The variables, control condition, and objective driving performance measures are described. Results show that driving with camera view is possible, although modest performance deterioration does occur.
