Abstract

The reflections in this text summarise 7 years (1997–2004) of participatory research focused on urban and environmental transformation and gender relationships, carried out in the Dominican Republic, Argentina and Cuba. The reflections stem from research and social action that aimed to obtain further insights into possible alternative ways of dealing with poverty and its consequences on the everyday life, public and private, of men and women living in deprived neighbourhoods and the outskirts of cities. To do this, we paid special attention to their empowerment processes when available. The studies were in tune with the controversial, changing and dynamic Latin American reality, which our results try to respond to. The authors integrated an international research network financed by UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations (MOST) programme, with researchers and social groups in Africa, eastern Europe and Brazilia, along with the countries mentioned above.
