Abstract

The paper is organized in six sections. The first section discusses the importance of “decision making”, the new concept used to improve automated incident detection (AID) algorithm performance. The reasoning toll used to support this concept is Bayesian networks, which is detailed in section two. In the third section, the general AID algorithm architecture and the basic function specification of its building blocks are outlined. This algorithm architecture leads to two AID algorithms: the TSC_fr for freeways and the TSC_ar for urban arterial roads, whose main features and performance are discussed in the following two sections. In section six, conclusions are drawn on testing results of the above two algorithm, and future research directions are indicated.
