Abstract

One approach to the formulation of elementary headway distribution model based on the distinction between leaders and followers is investigated, and a model of actual headway distribution in a given time period is derived by assembling the elementary model. The variance of relative speed distribution of successive vehicles is used for estimating the proportion of leaders and followers at a given headway. The elementary model of headway distribution is formulated based on this proportion of leaders and followers, and the relationships between model parameters and 1 minute traffic volume are examined by using observed data of traffic flow in two-lane roads. Then, the elementary model is applied to propose a practical distribution model of headway in a given time period, which may reflect the pattern of fluctuation of 1 minute traffic volume and the presence of congested flow. Our practical model can be calculated only by giving the distribution of 1 minute traffic volume and can readily be foreseen.
