Abstract

The paper discusses a new method that has recently been developed in addition to the classical methods for two way stop controlled (TWSC) intersections. The method is based on the procedure of additive conflict flows (ACF). This technique makes it possible to take into account the complicated regulations of pedestrian priority as they apply in Europe. In addition, the real road user behavior that deviates from the rules that are established in the highway code can be easily and flexibly taken into account. The paper shows the practicability of the concept by demonstrating the parameters. The major advantage of the new model discussed is that the capacity for any stream can be calculated as a function of traffic volumes of other streams in a single step, and no capacities of higher ranked streams need to be computed in advance. The new concept is expected to have the potential to substitute the gap acceptance theory to a great extent.
