Abstract

Automobile driver drowsiness and distraction are 2 major traffic accident risk factors. Therefore, they should be 2 of the most important areas to address when attempting to reduce highway fatalities. With this in mind, this article discusses the Driver State Sensor (DSS), from Seeing Machines, which measures both driver drowsiness and distraction. Already deployed in mining and fleet transport, the DSS is now being considered for deployment in serial automotive production.

Driver alertness, in almost all fleet or large-scale transportation operation areas, is a major concern. Two significant factors in related accident risk are driver distraction and driver drowsiness. A device from Seeing Machines which can measure both driver distraction and drowsiness is the Driver State Sensor (DSS). Distraction is quantified by the DSS through determination of the direction of a driver's attention by following the driver' face. DSS is on the cusp of serial production in the automotive sector, and has already been deployed in mining and fleet transportation. There is integration of driver and vehicle through DSS technology use. To ensure alerts at critical times and optimal feedback, driver attention is monitored. Driver workload management is achieved through orchestration of the various in-vehicle safety, entertainment, telematics and information systems, while there is observation of driver fatigue and subsequent action taken.
