Abstract

The eCall project is an in-vehicle emergency call project which is pan-European in nature. The eCall project is being promoted by the European Union (EU) as a way minimize post-accident response time and subsequently reduce the number of roadway fatalities. For all automobiles sold in the EU, the eCall project is expected to be mandatory by 2010. While the EU believes that talking automobiles represent a significant opportunity for roadway death reduction, they also present a significant challenge to automobile makers concerned with eCall system integration. The author discusses issues relating to the eCall project, including architectural components, component elimination, software integration requirements, and automotive requirements.
