Abstract

Event data recorders (EDRs) will eventually become standard features in automobiles. Already in use in aircraft, EDRs, also known as "black boxes", are able to provide brief histories of certain pre- and post-event parameters by acquiring and storing data. While automobile EDRs are less sophisticated than those in aircraft, memory requirements must still be given great consideration to provide accurate information concerning events, such as collisions. Currently, all memory requirements can be met only by ferroelectric random access memory (F-RAM). An author question and answer feature is provided in an insert.
