Abstract

As truck traffic continues to increase and mix with smaller vehicles on the highways, it will become ever more important to ensure that, when heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and automobiles, sport utility vehicles, vans, pickup trucks, and motorcycles collide in a crash, lives are not lost. With this in mind, this article discusses design principles and enhanced research vision aimed at making HGVs safer, more crashworthy, and less likely to severely damage lighter vehicle traffic thus protecting the passengers within.
