Abstract

The article describes how the traffic engineer can focus local community energies on effective crash mitigation programs and needed legislation. A traffic engineer must take a proactive stance toward the reduction of crashes. Many other professionals are battling to lower accident rates and working to address the health and economic issues associated with traffic accidents. Major traffic safety interests include the judicial system, the state department of motor vehicles, emergency medical services, and local youth orgnizations. To facilitate communications, a networking group should be considered. The article describes an informal group consisting of professionals interested in traffic safety formed by the city's traffic engineering staff in San Jose.
