Abstract

A new traffic safety program, Walk Alert, has been developed to address pedestrian safety needs by educating people in how to walk safely in or near traffic, how to improve pedestrian facilities, and how positive enforcement programs and uniform regulations improve pedestrian safety. Significant new engineering information has been developed to guide local practitioners in the uniform application of the installation of sidewalks and the installation of crosswalk markings for improving pedestrian safety. Walk Alert programs are being implemented in Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, and Kansas.
