Abstract

This is an examination of recent efforts by the New York City Department of Transportation to develop a comprehensive traffic safety program in a challenging urban environment. The innovative traffic safety program integrates activities in the areas of engineering, infrastructure maintenance, enforcement, education, and research. The program is practical, inexpensive and effective. The genesis of the Traffic Safety Division is described, as well as its current organization. Specific safety projects are described, including pedestiran safety projects, and highway safety improvements. New intiatives called the Severe Accident Forensic Evaluation (SAFE) Team to study fatal crashes, and the Computer Operated Research Program to Study the Expired (CORPSE) are also described.
