Abstract

A summary is presented of the results of a study of the potential impacts of 6 general classes of truck regulations on freeway safety and operations in 3 metropolitan areas in Texas. The truck restrictions and regulatory practices examined were (1) lane restrictions; (2) time of day restrictions; (3) speed restrictions; (4) route restrictions; (5) driver licensing and certification programs; (6) increased enforcement of existing regulations. The details of the study are described in this article. The study found no conclusive evidence that any of the regulations considered would significantly improve freeway safety or operations, at least not in the short-term. These and other conclusions from the study are discussed.
