Abstract

Some perspectives on the history and future directions of the U.S. Federal Highway Safety Programs are presented. In recent years, the federal government has accepted the responsibility of dealing with the issue of the cost of human and economic damage of highway accidents with new measures of skill and advanced thinking that have produced evidence of success. Continued federal responsibility for highway safety standards and funding is necessary since most states have neither the funds, the capability nor the inclination to set satisfactory safety standards.
