Abstract

The Northridge Earthquake rocked the Los Angeles metropolitan area on January 17, 1994, causing chaos for area commuters. This article reveals the extensive damage to roads, bridges, and ramps and describes the cooperative nature and collaborative efforts of national, state, and city transportation agencies in rerouting, cleanup, and reconstruction activities. The agencies also participated in public awareness activities to keep the public updated. This journal recognized nine agencies for their involvement in restoring transportation mobility to Los Angeles in the wake of the Northridge Earthquake. Each agency was awarded the 1994 ITE Transportation Achievement Award.
