Abstract

It is noted that this issue of the ITE Journal is designed to draw attention to, and focus interest on traffic safety. The articles in this issue focus on highway safety and the highway accident problem. They document the toll of fatalities, injuries, and human sufering in the United States and other countries. An history of ITE's role, as well as the U.S. government role in highway safety is presented. A broadened role for ITE (Institute of Traffic Engineers) in highway safety is advocated and prospects for the future are suggested.
