Abstract

Neo-traditional neighborhood design (NTND), now taking root in the United States is described, and its implications for traffic engineering are discussed. Characteristics of NDT are listed, and NDT towns in process of development across the country are tabulated. Several key traffic engineering issues raised by the NDT approach to land use planning are noted. The traffic engineering issues discussed here at some length include street layout, street design, parking, and trip generation. The accommodation of NTND objectives using existing traffic engineering principles and zoning ordinance are discussed. The role of the traffic engineer is viewed as critical to the success of NTND developments.
