Abstract

The article summarizes several projects that have been part of Oakland County, California's accident prevention efforts since 1967. The projects described here include those involving data systems, traffic engineering services, drunk-driving countermeasures, elderly driver retraining, and congestion countermeasures. These efforts played a major role in reducing the county's annual traffic death toll from an average of 200 in the mid-1960s to a current three-year average of 123. This reduction has occurred in the face of a traffic increase of more than 80% in 25 years. The improvements have been accomplished through cooperative efforts between the public sector, private sector, and community representatives.
