Abstract

A summary is presented of the proposed recommended practice of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. This proposed recommended practice considers speed humps as a roadway geometric design feature intended to physically reduce vehicle speeds. The proposed practice is presented in 6 chapters. The first chapter defines the purpose of the proposed practice, and provides an introduction to speed hump development and experience, and discusses speed hump vs speed bumps. The other chapters are as follows: Chapter (2) - guidelines for speed hump use; community relations and administrative procedures; (4) design and construction considerations; (5) monitoring and evaluation; (6) other considerations; and (7) source materials. Each of these chapters are briefly summarized. Research and use in the United States and other countries indicates that properly designed speed humps or speed hump systems installed with the proper engineering analysis can be a useful design feature to manage traffic speeds on local residential streets. However, they are not a cure-all for residential street problems, and other passive and active devices and techniques should also be considered.
