Abstract

A study is reported which made observations on the effect of driveway traffic making right turns into and out of driveways. The detials are given of the field studies conducted at two driveways located on signalized intersection approaches. The results of the study showed that driveway traffic can reduce the saturation flow rates on signalized intersection approaches. The amount of the reduction was dependent on the corner clearance of the driveway and the proportions of curb-lane volume that enter and exit the driveway. Also, the design of the driveway would also be expected to influence the size of the reduction. It is suggested that a saturation flow rate adjustment factor for driveway traffic should be added to the Highway Capacity Manual.
