Abstract

This report on the correction of hazards on urban streets is intended to assist in the identification and analysis of hazards on public roadways. Considerable information has been compiled from a variety of sources to aid the practicing transportation engineer and local decision maker in analyzing the transportation system and in selecting potential improvements for the system. The report is organized and presented in the following seven major topic areas: 1. Inventory methods. 2. Clear roadside and sight distance requirements. 3. Breakaway devices. 4. Crash attenuators. 5. Pedestrian and bicycle safety. 6. Other operational hazards and corrections. 7. Cost-effectiveness evaluation of hazard corrections. Some of the highlights of the complete report are contained in this summary. (Edited author abstract)
