Abstract

This paper focuses on the areas of merge and speed control at four-lane rural freeway lane closures. The following issues are addressed: (1) Investigation of the merits of implementing reduced speed limits; (2) Investigation of the impact of different (real and hypothetical) merging strategies on the standard deviation of the speed distribution at the beginning of the taper; and (3) Effectiveness of the standard construction zone traffic control devices in promoting early merge.
