Abstract

This article describes three recent initiatives that address the needs of bicyclists. The first initiative is the proposed revision of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which includes a new system of comprehensive bicycle guidance signs beyond that of the current simple bike route signs. Another proposal is a set of mode-specific informational signs that can be installed on shared-use path corridors where separate travelways are provided for different user types. New regulatory and warning signs for bicycle travel and a new shared-lane marking are also included in the draft MUTCD. The second initiative is a new edition of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities. This guide, the first new edition since 1999, will incorporate recognized best design practices for bicyclist accommodation based on the latest available research. The third initiative is a proposed new system of bicycle routes administered by AASHTO. A corridor map is being developed that will become a blueprint for state departments of transportation to develop these corridors into a comprehensive network of bicycle routes spanning the United States.
