Abstract

The Institute of Transportation Engineers 2008 Technical Conference and Exhibit provided a forum for discussion of various aspects of safety from the federal to the local level. This feature describes the policies and programs track at the conference. The four sessions that made up this track addressed reducing public agency exposure to tort liability, new approaches to safety plans, the national agenda for improving intersection safety, and partnerships. Transportation agencies are using innovative techniques and programs to improve transportation safety and to protect agencies from tort liability claims. Some key components to meeting the challenge include increased awareness of risk management, enhanced system analysis techniques, and grassroots partnerships with non-traditional partners to address target populations.
