Abstract

Smart work zone technology is being used to help increase safety and provide motorists with information regarding delays and travel times. This technology can also be used to collect real-time and historic data for both design and construction. This article discusses some of these uses. Smart work zones often use side-fire radar or other sensor technology to detect the presence and speed of vehicles approaching a work zone. This real-time data is used to display important messages on variable message signs. During the design process, historical traffic data can be used to provide more accurate lane closure restrictions. Historical traffic data can be used during construction to evaluate mobility goals and measure the effectiveness of traffic management strategies. An Internet-based reporting system can be used to assess work zone performance and respond to situations as they occur.
