Abstract

Adequate maintenance and improvement works of bridges and culverts are seldom done in India and other countries too. This is very necessary to avoid fast decay of service life and to avoid sudden collapses etc. often seen on roads, television and read in newspapers. Due to many reasons, repair of bridges and culverts get neglected a lot. Sudden failure, collapses closes the roads for years resulting intolerable inconvenience to the nearby population. All the narrow, weak and partially damaged even fully damaged, bridges and culverts can be rehabilitated, strengthened and widened to the required, anticipated traffic using available parts of foundation, piers, abutments and superstructure etc., as already done in a lot of bridges and culverts in the past. Timely maintenances and improvement works of bridges and culverts shall result in huge saving at national level, whose utilization shall result in construction of many more needed roads, bridges and culverts which shall be the real engineering skill. This Paper describes various rational approaches, suggestions and illustrations to achieve manifold economy in maintenance and improvement works of bridges and culverts requiring dedication and determination.
