Abstract

This article describes design possibilities for road junctions, with reference to their use in India. Junction design needs to take into account the ability of the driver to assess the traffic situation and react safely, and the traffic factors of volume and composition. Geometric features of a junction can be modified to some extent to reduce accidents and increase capacity: some suggestions include staggering a four-way intersection and providing separate lanes for turning, merging, and straight-on traffic. Priority control includes traffic signals, road geometry and roundabouts. Improving junctions decreases delay and congestion.
