Abstract

Glare on roads can cause accidents. It can be either direct or reflected. Highway design measures to reduce glare are outlined. Glare screens can shield drivers' eyes from oncoming headlights. The different types of glare screens are described and design considerations are discussed in relation to median barriers, horizontal curvature, horizontal sight distance, screen height and installation criteria. Design requirements for roadside plantations are listed. A field study was conducted to examine existing practices relating to antiglare in India. Examples of antiglare screens are described with photographs. Recommendations are presented for antiglare measures. Plantations were the cheapest glare screens if considered during construction. Tree spacings and choice of trees are discussed.
