Abstract

This article considers in-car safety features which are becoming more common in developed countries, but still not frequently used in developing countries. The author describes the inbuilt safety cage and energy-absorbing structures in a vehicle; the value of a transverse engine position in enhancing crashworthiness; the advantage afforded by a side impact protection system and front airbags; a collapsible steering column and whiplash protection; anti-spin and smooth road-holding; daytime running lights and high mounted rear brake light. In India, only safety belts and transverse engine position have been implemented by car manufacturers. The author recommends use of all available safety devices.
