Abstract

This passenger rail/road transport interchange in southern urban Delhi forms part of the infrastructure involved in achieving a projected modal split of 12% private/66% mass transport usage. The interchange was evaluated by a sample survey of 200 users who were questioned about their modal split, personal characteristics, frequency of travel, and journey purpose. Nearly 46% of users took the bus as their main mode of travel to the interchange, while 15% used private transport. Of those departing the interchange, 25% used private transport. 36% of users were inter-city commuters and the remainder were commuting within the city. Daily users comprised 69%. 30% of users were journeying to work and 42% to social engagements. 54% of users were in the lower middle income category. Lines of sight and ease of navigation around the interchange were investigated and deficiencies in the planning of the facilities identified. A larger ticket counter and passenger information facility were required. Factors relating to communication and signage were most significant in terms of the effectiveness of the transport interchange, while entry to the terminal, facilities for disabled people and links to public transport were important operational aspects of the terminal. Use of the results of the study to improve the terminal are discussed.
