Abstract

Public resistance to highway projects in India is described and it is suggested that community participation in the decision making process could reduce conflict and promote sustainable development. The mitigation of negative impacts on local communities is also considered important. Ensuring that local communities have access to plans by printed and electronic media, that Government agencies are approachable, and that citizens and community groups understand the planning process increases the likelihood that consensus will be attained.
