Abstract

The low level of service provided for bicycles and pedestrians in relation to their numbers in Chennai, India is discussed. Policies in India to improve road safety are described. Chennai has bus, suburban rail and mass transit services but the bus services (the most popular mode) are 150% overcrowded at peak hours. The rail service is also overcrowded but the rapid transit system is under-utilized because of high fares. Long distance buses have been introduced at the expense of short distance trips and feeder services for the rapid transit system. Segregation of bicycle traffic and the installation of footways, and the provision of off-road parking when major premises are built are considered essential. There has been a marked increase in private motorised transport that is unlikely to be stemmed without major investment in bus and rail services. Better integration of public transport and multi-storey car parks are considered necessary.
