Abstract

Only 56% of villages in India are connected to all-weather roads so the maintenance of unpaved roads remains important. These are classified as earth roads, soil gravel roads and WBM roads. The best maintenance technique for earth roads is upgrading. Gravel roads are prone to damage under wet conditions and are also best upgraded. WBM roads have a top layer of hard stone aggregate of 7.5-25 cm depth. The planning and financing of maintenance are discussed. Routine maintenance includes the repair of potholes and other damage, grading of shoulders, removal of debris, and weed control. Special maintenance consists of resurfacing and resealing. Restoration is required after floods and storms. Inspection, maintenance criteria and procedures for the repair of all types of road infrastructure are given.
