Abstract

Buses are involved in about 10% to 35% of road accidents in different States of India. This paper examines the frequencies and trends of bus-related accidents with special reference to public road transport undertakings (PRTUs) in India. It also attempts to obtain statistical relationships between selected accident-related factors by using PRTU data. Tables are given for: (1) distribution of accidents and fatalities in India by vehicle type; (2) percentages of bus-related accidents in major Indian States in each of the years 1983 to 1991; (3) the classification of states by percentage of bus accidents; (4) the average rate of accidents according to type of State PRTU in various years; (5) accident rates of major State PRTUs in various years; (6) accident rates and shares of State PRTUs according to urban, rural, and hilly terrain in 1991-92; (7) accident rates of selected city PRTUs in 1989-90 and 1991-92; (8) accident data for major State and City PRTUs in 1991; and (9) results of multiple linear regression analyses. The paper discusses the accident frequency of buses, the accident record of PRTUs, trend analysis of accidents, regional variations in accidents, accident rates of city services, correlation and regression analyses, and accident prevention measures.
