Abstract

The paper examines the complex problems of road safety and sustainable transport development in Iran. It is found that road safety is dependent on a composite interaction of several factors like the vehicle characteristics, road conditions, environment and driver's behaviour. International comparisons to identify the most successful (in terms of road safety) countries are described to see whether there are any common factors in their success. A brief discussion of counter-measures which have been successfully applied in some developed world and which may have potential for application in Iran is given. A strategy for improving road safety in Iran through implementation of comprehensive programmes of countermeasures is then discussed and presented. An approach to tackle road safety issues for sustainable transport development to make social and economic progress possible with least damage to the natural and built environment is advocated. A complete link between rise in accidents (fatalities and injuries), air quality and urban development seems possible. Further work is in progress to establish the exact link. Finally the paper concludes with a recommendation that the Islamic Republic of Iran should encourage adoption of simple policies, increased use of clean fuels and better and effective management of urban development to control vehicle pollution emissions in the country.
