Abstract

This paper reviews a representative selection of literature on road safety research outside India. The areas covered are: (1) accident reporting and analysis; (2) speed limits; (3) road user knowledge, behaviour and education; (4) road safety in developing countries; (5) accident costs; (6) drunken driving; and (7) urban road safety in developing and developed countries. More specific topics addressed in the cited literature include: (1) a system for reporting and coding road accidents in developing countries; (2) driver behaviour models; (3) the extent to which drivers obey traffic control and safety devices; (4) analyses of road accident rates and magnitudes in urban areas of selected developing countries; (5) an algorithm to enable traffic engineers and planners to identify factors causing above- average accident representation at specific sites; (6) a methodology to identify accident-prone locations; (7) steps taken to achieve the most effective approach to road safety in London; (8) determinants of compliant behaviour; (9) seat belt effects and use.
