Abstract

The author describes the occurrence in India of 'accident prone locations' or 'accident black spots' and considers techniques whi could be used to identify and analyse the problems at these locat The type of data required is discussed and categorised as acciden characteristics, road environment data or traffic data. The scal accident analysis is considered. Methods of determining accident prone locations are discussed including a) the quantum method, b) accident prone index, c) weighted severity index, d) critical wei method and e) multiple rate method. The first three methods are applied to data from National Highways 17 and 47 in Kerala. Rela methods including the physical observation method, conflict studi and location sampling are also considered.
