Abstract

The author considers problems encountered in the construction and maintenance of roads in cold regions such as the northern Himalayas. Wide temperature fluctuations, permafrost, lack of sunlight and accumulations of snow may be added to problems of topography, slope stability and drainage. Pavement structure, subgrade, base course and wearing course design are discussed. Maintenance problems of bituminous roads in cold regions are described. The effects of snow lying on the pavement are considered. Suggestions are then made for suitable materials, equipment and procedures to be used in these conditions.
