Abstract

Trends in fatalities, total accidents and motor vehicles in India for the period 1960-1974 are discussed, indicating that over this period the number of motor vehicles increased from 604902 to 2411545, the number of road accidents increased from 55478 to 109657, and fatalities increased at the rate of about 12.4 per cent per annum. Statistics are presented and discussed covering the road accident situation as it exists in each of the 27 states for 1974. The severity of accidents for some of the big cities such as Bombay and Calcutta for the year 1975 is considered, and statistics are presented related to the cause of the accident and the class of road user involved. Traffic engineering, regulations, enforcement, education and vehicle safety as preventive measures are discussed. Recommendations are presented on pedestrian safety, cyclists, vehicle safety, driver control and the education of children as suggested preventive measures. /TRRL/
